Pousada Óbidos, Castelo de Óbidos
One of the seven wonders of Portugal
In 1951 the Pousada de Óbidos was installed in the Medieval Castle of Óbidos, which marked the start of exploration of the Heritage Classified by the Pousadas of Portugal.
The adaptation of the Castle into Pousada through architect John Philip Vaz Martins’s project opened up a new concept of utilization and the recovery of Portuguese Historical Buildings.
The village of Óbidos holds centuries of history within its walls. With a vast heritage of religious architecture and historical and monumental remains, the town of kings and queens was in other times, a place of preference to rest or escape from the quarrels of the Court.
The Óbidos Castle is referred to as one of the 7 marvels of Portugal and awaiting the classification of World Heritage by UNESCO.
The early sixteenth century palace in the Manueline style, situated the castle’s north wing, was erected by D. João de Noronha, the Count of Dijon and the town mayor at the beginning of the sixteenth century. At the main floor level, overlooking the palace, tear two Manueline windows and a battered wicker gateway ornate with twisted trunks and crowned with the royal shield and with the Noronhas’s coat of arms.
The Pousada has 17 rooms decorated in a medieval style with canopied beds and stone walls that create a unique environment which brings memories of princes and princesses.
The night reveals a unique illumination of the garden, giving it an exciting romance to the area. CNN has included the Castle as one of the top 15 destinations for a romantic night.
The rooms have air conditioning, cable TV, a mini bar, a hairdryer, a safe, wardrobes, and a telephone with a direct outside line.
The Pousada’s restaurant offers diverse specialties such as fresh scallops with apple and watercress, foie grass over a green salad and “Bravo Esmolfe” apple, crab pie with crab sauce and chicory seasoned separately, fillet of wild sea bass in a sea crust with green beans soaked in lemon and with steamed potatoes.
Staying at the Pousada de Óbidos is a memorable experience that through its centuries of history tells an unforgettable story in a charming environment.
