Pousada History

Santa Clara A Velha Pousada's original building was constructed jointly with the dam, and inaugurated in 1969. Initially built as lodging for the the engineers in charge of building the dam, it remain as such until being acquired by the Pousadas Group. Santa Clara A Velha Pousada reopened after remodeling as a Pousada of Portugal in 1979, with a reduced lodging capacity of just six rooms.

In May 1994, the Santa Clara A Velha Pousada closed for renovation a and remodeling under the tutelage of architect Correa Guedes. The Pousada re-opened in May of 1996, now with 19 rooms. The official inauguration happened one year later, in May of 1997.

Santa Clara A Velha Pousada is unique, as it overlooks the dam and is encircled by hills and valleys, covered by plush vegetation. From its balconies and swimming pool, the magnificent sight invites anyone to relax and live the moment. It’s quite a place, ideal for the who likes hunting, fishing, doing water sports or simply relaxing in perfect integration with nature.

The village of Saint Clara-a-Velha located about 4km from the Pousada has 1000 inhabitants. The proximity of the village allows for leisure walks among the locals and to experience the local traditions.

Very close to the Pousada is the Natural Park and Costa Vicentina, will great beaches rivaling the ones in Algarve.

At last, 40km from the Pousada, the village of Odemira with its typical white houses and gardens invite visitors to a pause in the shade. The river runs quiet and in the estuary, the fortress of Vila Nova de Milfontes watches the port and the entrance to the river, once a preferred spot for pirates.

Great fishing ports with local artisans and the Sardao Handle with its lighthouse complete this spectacular natural landscape. Blessed with rich sea species, this region has a wide gastronomic tradition and is renowned for its fish and shellfish.
